Save Money, Stay Comfortable - Image 1

High energy bills always leave a sour taste in your mouth, but high energy bills when it seems like your home is never a comfortable temperature? That’s just wrong. We’re all spending more time at home these days, and it can feel like a personal attack every time your bare feet hit that cold floor.

If your basement or crawl space is poorly insulated, that’s probably what you’re dealing with. Your home may be too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and still you’re watching your hard-earned money fly right out the window.

To understand how to stop this, it helps to understand how and why it happens. Last week, we talked about the Stack Effect. Basically, hot air rises and cold air sinks, and this creates a vacuum effect in your home. The result is a home that is constantly at the mercy of the weather outside, no matter what your HVAC tries to combat. As the HVAC works (and works, and works) with little result, your bills climb.

So what do you do?

Insulation is key. Bad insulation, or no insulation at all, exposes gaps in the foundation, which can be as detrimental as leaving all of the windows in your house open when it comes to energy loss. Insulation is vital, but it has to be the right insulation, inorganic and waterproof.

Inorganic and waterproof insulation is vital because the area under your home is prone to moisture issues, and moisture plus organic material (think paper, cardboard, etc) breeds mold like wildfire. A favorite of mold is the paper backing on fiberglass insulation, which is great above ground but a poor choice for a basement or crawl space for exactly this reason.

We offer multiple materials to fully insulate your basement or crawl space. CleanSpace vapor barrier works in conjunction with spray foam insulation and SilverGlo insulation panels to provide complete coverage that’s completely impervious to mold and water damage.

Once your insulation is in place, your basement or crawl space is protected from the outside weather, and your home is protected from what’s happening below. This means your HVAC won’t work as hard or as often, and your home will maintain comfortable temperatures with less work - and less energy and money out the window.

Call today to ask how you can get your home - and toes - ready for a cozy winter.
