Wet and Crumbling Basement Walls in Grand Rapids
Challenge
Our challenge was to help a homeowner in Grand Rapids, Mich. prevent his basement walls from crumbling and to stop the water seeping into the basement. After a heavy rainfall, they would have to spend hours cleaning up the water and hoping that nothing valuable was ruined. In addition to the leaking and unsafe walls, their home was also uncomfortable in the winter due to poor insulation in their basement. Built in 1887, this single story home had these issues for years before they decided to make the change and contact Ayers Basement Systems to permanently solve their home’s problems and make the basement one less worry.
Solution
The first step to solving this home's problems was to install our patented Waterguard system around the entire perimeter of the basement. Waterguard is very discreet as it is installed underneath the flooring and only rises above the flooring a half-inch. It works by catching invading water and funneling it directly to the sump pump.
After solving the water problems in the basement, we then focused on making the home more energy efficient and comfortable. We installed Silverglo insulation around the basement walls to end the sporadic temperature spikes. Silverglo is made of tiny graphite particles, which is proven to be more effective than traditional insulation. Rim joist insulation was then put all around the perimeter to seal up any remaining possible air leaks.
All the work was done in one afternoon and the customer was extremely pleased with how painless the process was and how clean his basement was left after the work was done. He contacted Ayers because he had heard of us from a friend and didn’t want to interact with a pushy salesman, but rather wanted expert advice on what needed to be done.
