Adding Extra Space in Your Home Has Its Benefits

Adding Extra Space in Your Home Has Its Benefits - Image 1

Most basements are not that usable and people don't want to spend time in a dark, cold, musty area anyway. An egress window can add natural light and allow you to finish the space so it is no longer gross, cold, or dark. If you finish the space the possibilities are endless on what you can use that extra space for! We are going to list out some added benefits of having a usable basement space!

1. Sanity

August means back-to-school time but by now you have been home with your kids for a couple of months now. Not only have the kids started to get restless, but you are also probably getting really tired of hearing "I'm soooooo BOOREDDDD" 10 times a day. Or maybe looking at the school calendar might have gotten you thinking about the holiday breaks which means in-laws, cousins, or other family members camping out in your living room for multiple days.

Whatever it is that is causing you a headache, having extra space in the house can save you. With the finished basement, you could have an additional living room, game room, or movie room that you could send the kids to. You could also have an extra bedroom suite that can house family members so you don't have to hear them all night or see them in their underwear in the morning.

2. Health

Unfinished basements are susceptible to mold growth even if there is no visible water in the area. Basements tend to be humid which means there is water vapor in the air and if you combine that with any "food" (organic materials like wood, cardboard, or insulation) mold will grow. Mold spores are too small to see so by the time you find mold in the area, it is thriving in your basement environment and a big problem for you. Mold can cause allergy-like symptoms that never go away or come and go continually. No one wants that so keeping the basement dry is something you need to do in order to finish the space and keep your family healthy.

3. Hitting Goals

Your goals could be for a lot of things: work, fitness, learning, hobbies, etc.  We know how hard it is to get work things done in the kitchen when kids come to you with all of the questions or need help constantly. We also how hard it is to work out in your living room with your dog trying to join all your workouts. We even know how hard it is to get in that quiet time to finish your books or learn a new hobby when your home is the opposite of quiet and relaxing.  By finishing the basement area, you have options to do all of that. You can create a home gym, home office, relaxing library, craft room, or more.

The first step to achieving these benefits and having extra space in your home is installing a waterproofing system to keep out water and a dehumidifier to keep the space dry. In addition to prepping the space, we have a full line of products designed to give a finished look while also providing extra waterproofing power, from walls to flooring to egress windows that bring added living space up to building code. Regardless of what you could turn the extra space into (even if it is just a place to hide and eat the good snacks), it all starts with waterproofing.
