Helping a Central Lake, MI Family Rebuild After a Basement Wall Collapse

After heavy rains caused a devastating basement wall collapse, our team helped a Northern Michigan family begin rebuilding with a permanent solution.

Searching for Answers

At 4:45 a.m., Randy and Susan woke to a loud crash. Minutes later, they discovered an entire basement wall had collapsed in their home.

After days of heavy spring rain across Northern Michigan, water and soil pressure caused a basement wall to fail, sending mud and water rushing into the home they had planned to enjoy throughout retirement.

As Randy and Susan began searching for answers, they learned their insurance would not cover the damage. Friends, neighbors, and community members rallied around the family to help them begin rebuilding. Their story was later featured by local news stations, bringing attention to the challenges they faced and the long road to recovery ahead.

A Permanent Solution for Randy and Susan

In the days following the collapse, Randy and Susan faced uncertainty from every direction.

Like many homeowners facing a major structural emergency, they spent some time searching for answers and trying to understand the extent of the damage and what it would take to save their home. Then, a friend handed them a business card and encouraged them to call Ayers Basement Systems.

When Rick, System Design Specialist, met with the family, he immediately recognized the urgency of the situation. Within 24 hours, Rick made their project a top priority due to the severity of the structural damage. Their basement looked more like a tall crawl space, with inches of mud covering the floor and only a temporary support beam helping hold up the entire home.

Rick developed a repair plan focused on stabilizing the structure and preserving the home Randy and Susan hoped to enjoy throughout retirement. Additionally, it was important for us to provide them with a permanent solution that they could feel confident in, and one that also fit comfortably in their budget.

After spending so much time researching online and hearing countless opinions about their situation, Randy and Susan had understandable concerns. We reassured them that at Ayers, we work with homeowners to find permanent solutions. From flexible financing options to customized repair plans, our goal is to make permanent protection attainable and provide peace of mind for years to come.

After working through the final details, Rick and Randy stepped outside to talk. That's when Randy shared something that stuck with Rick:

"This is the first time in two weeks that I have seen my wife smiling. Thank you for that."

Moments like that are why we do what we do.

Our purpose is to redefine the contractor experience and change the way homeowners think about home repair. We show up when we're needed, communicate clearly, and do what we say we'll do. We help homeowners navigate difficult decisions about one of life's biggest investments, their home.

Your home should be a place of comfort, security, and peace of mind. Our job is to help protect it while earning the trust of the people who live there.

Building a Plan to Save the Home

The damage required significant structural repairs. Our team developed a plan that included removing debris and unstable material, excavating mud and soil from the basement, installing SmartJacks and supplemental beams, rebuilding the failed wall with Shotcrete, and restoring stability to the foundation. The plan also included Basement Waterproofing measures to help protect the basement from future water intrusion.

Because of the extent of the damage, this project required multiple specialized crews working together. Foremen Nate, Dylan, and Ayinde each led different phases of the repair effort, including structural stabilization, excavation, wall reconstruction, and waterproofing.

Their teams worked through challenging conditions to help restore the home’s safety and create a permanent solution for Randy and Susan.

A 5-Star Review

After meeting with Rick and reviewing the proposed repair plan, Susan shared this review on Google that made our entire team smile:

"Rick P. showed up to our place like the cavalry riding in, guns ablazing! This was the first time in 2 weeks since our disaster that we felt we were not going to lose our entire home to collapse because a basement wall failed. He worked patiently to get us pricing that we could afford while being very clear about which line items are absolutely necessary to save our home. I highly recommend Ayers Basement Systems if you have any issues with your basement."

Why This Project Matters

As a local, family- and veteran-owned company serving Michigan for 45 years, we are reminded by projects like this why we do what we do.

These aren't just houses. They're homes where families have built memories, planned retirements, and invested years of their lives. When disaster strikes, our goal is not simply to repair a foundation. It's to help homeowners regain stability and confidence in their future.

Being a Michigan-based company means the people we help are often our neighbors, fellow community members, and friends of past customers. In Randy and Susan's case, that connection is what led them to Ayers in the first place.

From Rick's initial visit to the work completed by Nate, Dylan, Ayinde, and their crews, this project was about more than repairing a collapsed wall. It was about helping a family move forward and protecting the home they planned to enjoy for years to come.

We're honored Randy and Susan trusted our team during this challenging time, and we're proud to be part of their journey toward rebuilding.
