5 Hidden Signs Your Crawl Space Needs Help

Crawl spaces - yuck. That could be the whole blog, and you’d probably agree. They’re dark, and dirty, and even three hours after exiting one you still feel like there are bugs on you.

5 Hidden Signs Your Crawl Space Needs Help - Image 1

Like I said - yuck.

So it’s no surprise that you might not be chomping at the bit to get down in there and look at all the dark creepy nothing. But at the same time, you might worry that ignoring it will lead to major problems in your home.

Well you’re right. But the good news is that you don’t have to venture into the abyss in order to spot issues. Many of our customers don’t even know for sure that their crawl space is at fault when they call us, they just know that something weird is happening and they can’t figure out what.

Keep an eye out for the following signs your crawl space is up to no good.

1) Sinking, “Soft” Floors

You’re walking through the kitchen, minding your own business with a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, when suddenly your foot kind of...sinks. Soft spots are a sign of failing support beams in your crawl space.

2) Cold Floors

Same kitchen, same Cinnamon Toast Crunch. But now you’re walking through on your tiptoes like Fred Flintstone because the floors are freezing even though the heat is cranked. If your floor is cold, it’s probably because your crawl space is exposed to the elements.

3) Cracks Everywhere

Spanning diagonally from your doorframes. Peeking out from your crown molding. Framing every archway in your home like an HGTV design reject. Drywall cracks upstairs are usually a sign of problems downstairs.

4) ...smells.

I don’t even need to describe the smell for you to be able to imagine it, do I? Like a gym bag you forgot in your trunk. For a week. In August.

If you kept your gag reflex in check, congratulations.

5) Increased Allergies and Asthma

Those aforementioned smells affect a lot more than your delicate nose. The moldy source of the smells can cause any number of breathing problems and exacerbate existing allergies and asthma.

If you've noticed any of the above in your home, and you suspect your crawl space is to blame, call us at 1-800-638-7048 and we'll take the hit of venturing down there for an inspection - we'll even do the inspection for free!
